La campagna di disobbedienza civile lanciata da prigionieri palestinesi il 27 settembre sta entrando nella sua terza settimana.Centinaia di prigionieri hanno aderito alla campagna iniziando uno sciopero della fame a tempo indeterminato o della durata di tre giorni.



Il 10 e l'11 ottobre, tutti i prigionieri nelle prigioni di Gilboa (336) Nafha (511), Rimon (716) e Eshel (262) e Ashkelon (142) hanno dichiarato uno sciopero della fame a tempo indeterminato, e sembra che altri si uniranno nei prossimi giorni. Anche quattro donne sono in sciopero della fame nella prigione di Damon e, come ad altri prigionieri in sciopero, è stato loro negato il sale e alcuni oggetti elettronici sono stati confiscati dalle loro celle.

I nostri avvocati stanno regolarmente cercando di visitare coloro che hanno aderito allo sciopero della fame, nonostante il servizio penitenziario israeliano (IPS) continui a porre ostacoli a queste visite dichiarando una 'situazione di emergenza' nelle carceri. Oggi ai nostri avvocati è stato impedito di incontrare i prigionieri in sciopero nel centro di detenzione di Jalameh e nella prigione di Megiddo. A Megiddo le autorità carcerarie hanno detto al nostro avvocato che non possono consentire la visita a due prigionieri che avevano rifiutato di alzarsi in piedi per l'appello e che essi sarebbero troppo deboli per ricevere una visita. Alla richiesta di una dichiarazione ufficiale su questa politica, le autorità carcerarie hanno rifiutato.

Le famiglie dei prigionieri di Gilboa hanno riferito ad Addameer che i prigionieri in sciopero della fame hanno rivolto un appello agli attivisti internazionali per i diritti umani, ai gruppi e alle organizzazioni affinchè sostengano la loro battaglia, scrivendo al Servizio Penitenziario Israeliano per protestare contro le misure sempre più punitive adottate contro di loro.

Addameer aderisce ed appoggia questo appello, e chiede a tutti di intervenire inviando le lettere allegate in ebraico e in inglese chiedendo all'IPS di smettere immediatamente l'uso dell'isolamento e delle punizioni eccessive contro i prigionieri in sciopero, e di terminare il prima possibile di negare loro il sale - un nutriente vitale per mantenere la loro salute.

More than four hundred Palestinian prisoners are participating in an open hunger strike which started on Tuesday 27 September 2011. The hunger strike is one form of civil disobedience taken by prisoners against the malicious policies and regulations of the Israeli government towards the Palestinian prisoners, which include worsening detention conditions - particularly the harsh isolation policy whereby prisoners are held in difficult conditions for lengthy periods away from other prisoners, the denial of university education and of family visits. These actions indicate a clear policy of collective punishment imposed by the Israeli government for political gains.

The strike is entering its third week; it is an open strike, meaning that unless the demands of the prisoners are met the strike will likely end in deaths. The demands of the prisoners are as follows: to eliminate the harsh isolation policy; to restore access to academic education in prisons; to restore access to books and newspapers; to enable without limitation the rights of prisoners to meet with their family members and their lawyers; to cease the excessive use of fines as a means of punishment.

As the strike progresses, the prisoners’ rights have been further violated and they have been stripped of their dignity. The health of the prisoners is deteriorating rapidly, as a result of the Israeli Prison Service’s denial of clean drinking water and salt and minerals, which are essential nutrients for the prisoners whilst they are on a hunger strike. Moreover, the prisoners are faced with worrying levels of psychological ill treatment by the prison guards, who are regularly threatening and humiliating the strikers and have intensified the use of isolation.

We stress that the demands of the Palestinian prisoners are legitimate and call on the Israeli Prison Service to comply with them and to stop the following violations:

- To release all prisoners from isolation
- Provide clean drinking water and minerals
- Stop the humiliation, threats and use of fines by the Israeli Prison Service

In addition, we stress the importance of the presence of a professional medical team to monitor the strikers’ health and physical condition, and provide any needed health care with the patient’s consent.
Moreover, we request that the IPS desist from force-feeding any prisoner through any means, in
accordance with World Medical Association Declaration of Tokyo - Guidelines for Physicians Concerning Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in Relation to Detention and Imprisonment, 1975.

Finally, we stress that you afford prisoners all protective measures to which they are entitled, in
accordance with the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions.
