APPELLO URGENTE!

Flavia

On Tuesday 21st April, early in the morning, Ahmed Qatamesh was arrested in his own home in Betlemme. He is a well-known, estimated Palestinian writer and professor. He was not charged by Israelian authorities. Policemen arrested him in front of his wife and his daughter. The West Bank military commander of the Israeli Defence Force handed an order of " administrative detention", a sort of law which allows Israeli to arrest anybody without any charge. Qatamesh's guilts are his written essays, and his opinions in favour of self-decision making of his people.

As Italian citizens we feel a deep sense of indignation in front of this arrogant action of oppression and disdain Palestinian people and we ask that Qatamesh Ahmed is being realesed immediately together with the Palestinian prisoners and that the procedure of "administrative detention" is being eliminated and valued as an illegal procedure.

Best regards

Ricevo ed Inoltro, da Omar Barghouti

Today, 6 May 2011, Amnesty International issued an urgent appeal (attached) for
the immediate release of Dr. Ahmad Qatamesh or "trial in full conformity with
international fair trial standards."
Amnesty also expressed concerns that Dr. Qatamesh is "being detained for the
peaceful expression of his political views and therefore a prisoner of
conscience."

Excerpt from the Amnesty International Appeal:

"A military court official told Ahmad Qatamesh’s lawyer that he would be
released at 5pm on 3 May, and a prison officer gave him the same message.
However, at 8.30pm on 3 May, Ahmad Qatamesh was handed an administrative
detention order signed by the West Bank military commander of the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF). The order appeared to have been produced for another
detainee, since Ahmad Qatamesh’s name was written over correction fluid. The
order was for an “extension” of administrative detention even though this is
Ahmad Qatamesh’s first administrative detention order since the 1990s. The order
also stated that he was an activist in Hamas, an organization with very
different political views to those of the PFLP [the group he was initially
accused of membership in].
Ahmad Qatamesh was arrested by the IDF in 1992 and reportedly tortured. He
documented his experiences in a publication called “I shall not wear your
tarboosh [fez]”. Over a year later he was placed under administrative detention
after a judge had ordered his release on bail. After repeated administrative
detention orders, he was eventually released on 15 April 1998."
------------------
Accordingly, Qatamesh's family urges all people of conscience around the world
to write to their members of parliament, local officials and institutions to
apply effective pressure on Israel to end its illegal policy of administrative
detention, to immediately release Ahmad Qatamesh and all Palestinian
political prisoners, and to abide by international law and human rights
principles.
